Thomas Tenorio

Thomas Tenorio is known for continuing the traditional motifs of the 1880’s-1920’s and beyond. He also is developing a different style of his own, with black designs on red slip and carved outlines to emphasize the designs. His smaller pieces are fired in a pit, as is traditional. Larger pieces are fired in a kiln somewhat like the traditional “hornos” (bread ovens).
Self-taught, he learned pottery by observing established potters, “reading, research and trial and error.” He is regarded as an exceptional potter, one who maintains the highest standards of pottery-making in his pueblo of Santo Domingo. Collectors and show judges agree.
