Sarah learned to carve by helping her legendary father, Leekya Deyuse, with his polishing, when she was a teenager. Now, much, much later, she has continued carving in her father’s distinctive style, helping collectors develop a deep appreciation for the old-style fetishes.
Leekya Deyuse was famous for carving stones leaves in his jewelry. Sarah, now considered the oldest working carver in Zuni still creates charming necklaces of turquoise leaves, strung on natural coral, with bits of turquoise. In addition, she continues to create authentic fetishes, including coveted sets of the animals who guard the six directions: the heavens, north, south, east, west, and the underground.
Sarah Leekya is a link to an illustrious past, and still creates pieces for today’s and tomorrow’s collectors.
