Rose Cata Gonzales

One of the grand old ladies of pottery, known for the black pottery which originated at San Ildefonso Pueblo, into which she married. She lived from 1900-1989. Among her pupils were her son, Tse-pe, Dora Tse-pe, his wife, and Irene Tse-pe.
She is credited with the innovation of deep carved pottery, around 1930, when she tried to copy a shard her husband found while hunting. She won many awards throughout her life, and her pottery is highly valued and collected, today.
