Now into her 80’s, this carver is a daughter of the legendary Deyuse Leekya. She learned to carve by helping him out, and still carries on the traditional style he perfected. Now, she is one of the oldest – if not the oldest – carvers in Zuni, and still working.
The wolf is one of the protective and healing animals; Guardian of the East. It is also a major hunting fetish, and symbol of communal unity, since they live and hunt in family packs. This wolf is more appealing than fearsome, but nevertheless is an authentic fetish. White is the traditional color for the Guardian wolf, and the material here is a creamy marble, with reddish specks, like reflections of the rising sun, in the east. His bright black eyes and raised head give him an sweet expression. Note his bushy tail, pointing downward – that is one of the characteristics of a wolf fetish.
Abstract in form, but recognizably a wolfish animal, this fetish is both charming, and an suthentic piece of fetish carving history.
