Something a little different, from Laguna, the nearest Pueblo to Acoma, which shares the bright white clay with its neighbor. This is called a betrothal basket by the potter, following the local custom of gift-giving. The interior is painted with the traditional red clay slip, and the exterior is decorated by rows of dainty, impressed shell designs. The rope handle adds visual interest to the surface, which has been burnished by hand to a pleasingly smooth glow. This is a delightful addition to, or start of, a pottery collection – and/or a wonderfully appropriate engagement gift (or, a gift for any occasion)!
