One of the legendary Teddy Weahkee’s grandchildren, revered in her own right as a premier carver, Lena here reverts to tradition, forsaking her contemporary art glass material for a bit. This necklace features a marvelous group of turquoise fetish animals, on handmade baby olive shell heishi – a totally traditional piece.
Lena’s style respects the origins of the fetish: a found stone that resembles a particular animal. Therefore, the forms are abstracted rather than anatomically detailed. The fetishes are graduated, and rhythmically spaced so each can be admired individually. The delicate hue of the turquoise shows up beautifully on the dark brown shell heishi. The fetish animals on the necklace are varied, including: bears, eagles, frogs, mountain lions, and more. The central pendant is an coral-eyed owl, which the Zuni consider a night time protector- sort if a night watchman. Each fetish is carved in the award-winning Lena Boone style, and the whole makes a lovely necklace.
Lena doesn’t make necklaces very often, so this is a real treat. Completely traditional, except for the finesse of the carving and heishi, the length of the necklace lends itself to layering – fetish necklaces are famously light in weight – or it looks striking on its own.
