Daughter of the renowned Zuni carver Leekya Deyuse, this fine artist learned to carve by helping her father. Now elderly herself, she has continued carving in her father’s style, maintaining tradition. This traditional eagle carving is our latest acquisition of hers. With a rounded, abstract form this is an eagle in the old, even ancient, style of fetishes. The form suggests that of the actual bird, and conforms to the established style for eagles. His head is raised toward the heavens, where the eagle carries prayers and wishes. As Guardian of the Skies, the eagle brings you all his powers. The turquoise from which he is carved is a clear, heavenly blue, with quite a lot of earth-toned matrix. Along with its protective and esthetic qualities, this eagle represents a link to the past, since the carver is the last surviving child of the most famous of all Zuni carvers, and likely the oldest working carver in Zuni, today.
