Two of these whimsical turtles are plodding along their turtle way; perhaps floating downstream on a log, or crossing overland on their way to the river. The third one, on the right, seems to have decided to blaze his own trail and go off in the opposite direction. Or maybe, he’s covering the rear? Whatever his motive, he is really smiling!
Carved out of one piece of fossil ivory tusk, with fine detail, this is an unusual and charming fetish. The shell markings, natural poses, movement and proportions are all signs of an expert carver.
Turtles signify longevity, and also very good luck – they are found in and around water, a precious and life-giving element in the desert.
