A Kiowa from Oklahoma, Byron McCurtain graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts, in New Mexico, with a degree in photography.
Chance led him to know several jewelers, and he developed an interest in lapidary work.
Notably mentored by the late, celebrated Gibson Nez, Byron has emerged as a master of stone-work, and is equally masterful in silver work.
Working with top-quality stones, his impeccable technique and artistic eye have brought him into the forefront of current artists.
These lovely earrings demonstrate his esthetic vision and consummate skill.
Completely hand-fabricated from sheets of sterling silver, these dainty earrings resemble both shields and Yei figures wearing tablitas. The lines allude to rays of sun emanating from the bright red drop of Mediterranean coral, hand-cut by Byron, in the center.
Light-weight, and aesthetically pleasing, these wonderful earrings will go just as well with jeans and a t-shirt as they do with a fancy dress or pantsuit!
