Description:
The foremost bibliography of Indian jewelry artists says: “Carl and Irene Clark are among the greatest Indian jewelers in history.” The fame of their incredibly tiny mosaic inlay pieces is world-wide, wherever their micro-fine pieces are proudly worn and exhibited. When you wear a piece of the Clark’s micro-mosaic jewelry, you wear a piece of jewelry history.Hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny square and slivers of gem-quality stones are inlaid in sterling silver to form a colorful, intricate design. As if to demonstrate their expertise in all phased of jewelry-making, the Clarks have given more emphasis to the silver work here, although the inlay is still central and astonishing. Fabricated with almost as much complexity as the mosaic, the cuff is essentially composed of two separate bracelets. The bottom is a heavy gauge strip of sterling that has been deeply hand-stamped, and adorned with a pair of solid gold rounds. Look at the next-to-last photo, at the side, and enjoy the all-over pattern of stamping on the inside of the bracelet; it is almost equal in complexity to the micro-mosaic inlay. The stones are inlaid in a separate band of hollow, highly polished silver that was superimposed on the stamped band after being inlaid. The inlaid design is tapered, following the form of the the polished silver. A partial Yei figure (Navajo spirit) is seen against a turquoise background, enlivened by the variety of turquoise used. Above the Yei’s feathers, a vivid design of coral and lapis hovers, outlined in jet and centered in white shell. This looks a lot like a burst of fireworks, but most likely represents the sun, and the four earthly directions. Accents of black jet ground all the vibrant hues. Notice the lines of jet and shell around the Yei’s neck, they are echoed by the lines in the stamped crescents at each edge of the bracelet. Similarly, the jagged angles of the sunburst, the feathers, and the tiny squares of inlay all relate to the stamped silver pattern. Not just superlative inlayers, the Clarks are the whole jewelry/artistry package! As comfortable to wear as it is gorgeous to look at, this is a new, magnificent piece of museum-quality work by legendary artists.
