Natural red coral has historically been a favored material for Native tribes – and other peoples all over the world – for its range of gorgeous, flaming hues. Nowadays, as reefs are in danger and coral is scarcer and scarcer, it can almost qualify as a “precious stone”.

The resplendent coral in this impressive ring is the soft, true coral color favored by the Navajo. With its beveled edges, it sits serenely atop an antiqued silver setting. Surrounded by elaborately stamped designs, the simplicity and high gloss of the coral is a beautiful contrast to the satin finish of the silver.

In the silver work, the repetitive pattern of linear motifs creates a symmetrical harmony. Chiseled lines in the bezel that holds the coral are repeated in the fluted beads above and below it, and in those at the sides. The various half-rounded and arrow-shaped stamps also contain patterns of parallel lines, although in a smaller, more delicate scale. These continue all the way around the shank for a totally integrated design.

Delbert is a brother of our artist-in-residence Alvin Vandever, and one of his many gifted siblings. Each one has his, or her, individual style.

This “neo-traditional” ring has its own majestic and compelling beauty, with the artful combination of a glossy stone and complex, antiqued silver stamping.
