Duane Maktima is a revered name in Indian jewelry; both his contemporary design innovations and his mentoring are legendary. A major award-winner, his work is collected all over the world.
This splendid pendant features brilliant, glossy red rosarita, tempered by the glitter of iridescent laboratory opal. Rosarita is a byproduct of gold-mining, and noted for the vivid red color, as well as its glass-smooth surface.
The stones are inlaid in a star-burst of sterling silver, whose textured surface and edge are a handsome contrast to the high luster of the rosarita. To complete the composition of the design, the “rays” of the star – or sun? – are highly polished, bringing the twinkle of the opal, and the radiance of the rosarita, all the way around the piece. The little round holes that punctuate the textured silver might suggest raindrops, to balance the hot red and sunburst form, or just a festive addition to the design.
Not round, not long, but a just-right rounded shield shape, this pendant, with its uncommon stone and impeccable workmanship, is definitely a rare and beautiful piece, by a recognized master jeweler.
