A beautifully fashioned piece by a younger potter, who overcame the premature loss of her husband and potting partner to reach full artistic flowering on her own.
An eagle dominates one side of this handsome seed pot, and a deer or elk, the other; in between, rain and water signs.
All together, they represent a prayer for good hunting and a bountiful harvest – health, happiness and abundance.
The design was scratched out of the beige base clay, and slips of powdered natural clay, mixed with water, were then applied: red clay for the majority of the design, with accents of green, yellow and blue. Then, it was all polished, by hand, with a stone.
Lustrous polish contrasts with the textured matte background, while sparks of vivid color enliven the piece.
