Married into the Reano family of distinguished mosaic jewelers, Charlene learned from her in-laws so well, that she herself does the designing, cutting and inlaying. Her husband does the final polishing and grinding of the shells and stones. She has won many prestigious awards since starting on her own in the 1980’s.
This stunning choker has two very different color arrangements that seem to range from the glow of sunset at dusk, to limpid tropical seas. On one side, the dramatic, stormy-skies-and-sunset palette of spiny oyster shell, black jet, black lipped mother of pearl, and iridescent abalone shell. On the other side, you have a cheerful combination of turquoise, spiny oyster shell, melon shell, lapis, and mother of pearl.
Each side radiates with a bold pattern of color in a small, intricate scale. Each side gleams with luminosity, thanks to the mother of pearl and abalone shell pieces. What is really stunning, though, aside from the bilateral color combinations, is the elegant pattern that the individual tabs themselves create.
There is no room for her mark, so the artist has “signed” it by including one little piece that doesn’t match, on each side. In the first large photo, it can be seen at the top left, second from the top. Looking at the turquoise side, look at the right side, second piece from the top.
Perfect for traveling, since it has two fabulously different color schemes and designs, it is two necklaces in one – and gorgeous on both sides. At home or on the road, this is a stunning, versatile piece by a famous jeweler at the top of her exacting art.
