This fine Zuni artist creates highly respected and avidly collected pieces of meticulous inlay, with transitional designs that are both traditional and modern. Employing traditional symbols and materials, he blends them into familiar, but unique designs. He likes to use the swivel method he perfected to make reversible pieces, like this lovely pendant.
Enclosed within an inlaid silver oval, he created a charming face, wearing a headdress. Traditional mother of pearl, coral, turquoise, and jet are used, but not in the expected Sunface design. On a background of white mother of pearl, jet forms her eyes and mouth, as well as divisions on the forehead that separate natural red coral and blue Sleeping Beauty turquoise. On the head, a curve of sky blue turquoise is inlaid within edges of polished sterling.
Spin the head on its pivot of silver, and a sister face appears. It is very similar, but with a different arrangement of the same materials, and an arrow-shaped jet mouth, instead of a circle. The dominant colors here are rich red coral and the beautiful blue turquoise, creating a more vibrant effect than the moonlit white mother of pearl on the reverse. The oval frame is inlaid with both the coral and the turquoise, one series of each stone on either side.
The bail is also inlaid, diagonally, with coral, turquoise and jet, to complete the composition. Not just a pretty face, beautifully designed and made, by hand, by an award-wearing jeweler, this is Handsome to wear and fun to twirl around, when you’re waiting for the bus, or your date.
