From two families of illustrious potters, this artist creates richly pigmented pieces that are all natural in origin: hand made local clay and colors of vegetal and/or clay slips. Her interest in the natural world extends to the subjects of her designs. Here, her inspiration was the butterfly, centered on this elegantly formed and decorated seed pot. Using time-honored motifs, the artist has arranged them in new ways: the famous Acoma fine-line rain design is here painted in soft, plant shades of sage green and pale russet, and formed into criss-crossed squares. The solid dark lines that frame the different design elements are dark brown, not black, to better blend in with the other, gentle natural hues. surrounding The realistic butterfly, in the center, is painted with contrasting boldness but similarly warm earthy hues. Notice how the lines and squares that decorate the butterfly harmonize with the lines and squares in the all-over pattern. The whole piece looks like a sun-kissed meadow – and will, all year long.Fine design, fine potter, finely made, and finely priced.
