This carver is famed for his detailed animal fetishes. Here, he has chosen the humble duck, swimming in gold-toned “waters”. Duck and water are all one solid piece of tawny rock. We cannot decide whether it is jasper or Picasso marble, both of which Michael uses often. In either case, the result is wonderful. The pose of the duck is realistic, and the detailed rendering of its feathers is beautiful. The wings are raised, so that the tail is carved on a separate level. The “water” is shown through carved ripples. Michael is a much-honored artist, whose award-winning work is in museums, as well as shown at Native art shows. He enjoys a happy following for his carefully carved animals. Now you can join them with this little fellow – he is just …ducky.
