An accomplished carver, along with his late brother Pernell, and nephew Derrick Kaamasee, Max is especially noted for detailed carvings of animals, as seen in this fine badger.
The badger is one of the six protective and healing animals who guard the geographic directions. The badger is Guardian of the South, and helps medicine men find the roots and herbs needed for healing.
The artist has made wonderful use of the natural markings of the stone, ending with the darkest part at the head. Muzzle, paws, tail, are all well defined and naturalistic.
The furry pelt is nicely suggested, as well. Notice the eagle feather that lies across the animal’s back, with the stem at his head; symbol of the sacred power of the badger.
Handsome stone, fine carving of a protective and healing animal – a great little fetish. Keep him alone, or start (or add to) a complete set of all six.
