This top award-winning carver is collected internationally, and is credited with introducing realism to fetish carving. He, and his family, are among the leading carvers in Zuni.
Badger is one of the six directional Guardian animals. Guardian of the South, he is believed to have knowledge of healing roots and herbs. In addition, tenaciousness and persistence are part of his qualities.
This badger is beautifully carved from an uncommonly gentle-hued Picasso marble. His head is raised, and looking to the side, so there is more animation in this fetish than usual.
His bright blue turquoise eyes are not naturalistic, but add a vivid accent to the neutral marble.
The pose and proportion are wonderfully real; you can feel the weight of the animal, resting on his haunches, and the rounded strength of him, as well as his thick furry pelt.
Notice the eagle feather attached to his head: that represents a prayer for the badger’s healing power.
This is a small, but beautiful and powerful carving.
