Description
We still have just a few pieces by this master of color, whose life ended much too soon. Lynol’s remarkable color sense is evident in this elegant combination. These natural, semi-precious stones look stunning together, thanks to the artful juxtaposition of complementary colors, which brings out the best in each one.
Raised high, and assembled in a lively mosaic, these high-quality stones seem to glow with their own light. Rich darks are enhanced by ethereal lights: luscious purple sugilite, star-sprinkled deep blue lapis, and deep red coral are punctuated by slivers of silver, bright greens and pale pinks. One piece of striped spiny oyster shell, and one tiny piece of emerald green malachite (at one end) add to the mixture. Along with a fabulous sense of color, the artist’s stone-cutting and inlay work were just as expert.
We lament his premature passing, and are glad that this work survives, in a wonderfully happy array of hues. There will be no new pieces, alas. However, Lynol’s legacy of brilliantly arranged color will always delight us with its vibrancy.
