Maxine is an award-winning potter, the middle generation of three notable artists. She is also a retired teacher and administrator in the Jemez Pueblo school system. This chanting pair demonstrates, once again, the simplicity and elegance that characterize her pieces. As in all her work, this piece is all about graceful line and form. The play of texture – gorgeous, glittering mica-laden clay against smooth matte finishes – like every element in this work, is subtle but vital. These closely joined figures are both powerful and serene, epitomizing the closeness of mother and daughter. The border of the mother's robe is meticulously painted; every element, from hair, to necklaces, to the sweep of the robes, complements and completes every other. With the utmost simplicity and economy of detail, the artists conveys the intensity of the chanting, and the mother/daughter intimacy. Beautiful to look at, impeccably constructed and finished, with an emotional punch, as well.
