Micro-Inlay Fringe Necklace

Married into the Reano family of distinguished mosaic jewelers, Charlene learned from her in-laws so well, that she has won many prestigious awards since starting on her own in the 1980s.

Charlene does the designing, cutting and inlaying, piece by tiny piece, all by hand. Her husband Frank does the final polishing and grinding of the shells and stones.

A more casual version of her award-winning necklaces, this one combines minuscule disks of clamshell heishi, with a beautiful, multi-colored, mosaic inlaid fringe.

The single strand of white heishi is punctuated with occasional disks of black jet, golden shell, and brown, baby olive shell.

Her “signature”; a flat cube of multi-inlaid stones, is also seen among the clamshell heishi.

The graduated, tapered bars that comprise the fringe, are composed of black jet and deep purple sugilite, animated by lustrous mother of pearl, melon-hued spiny oyster shell, green turquoise, and denim lapis.

With a bouquet of colors and the white shell strand, the necklace has a summery feel, like a sunlit garden.

Turn it over, however, and you have a totally different look!

Here, black jet rules, with mother of pearl to add its luminous contrast, and royal purple sugilite to add richness to the dark palette.

According to the colors on each side, this gorgeous necklace could be called “Night and Day”.

With such a happy variety of colored stones, on one side, and the sleek, sexy look of glossy black, moonstruck white, and dark purple, on the other, you have a whole wardrobe of necklaces, in one.

A boon to travelers, who will need just one necklace for most occasions, this beautifully composed and fabricated medley of shells and stones amortizes quickly, whether at home, or away.
