Abby Quam Panteah is a member of the renowned Quam family of fetish carvers, from Zuni. The Quams, along with the Quandelacys and the Cheamas, are the “Big 3” of fetish carving families.
She often collaborates with her husband, Clayton Panteah, who is renowned for his inlay work.
This charming set looks like a pretty pendant and matching earrings, in beautiful blue lapis, dotted with tiny bits of turquoise.
Look closely: all three pieces are carved, abstract frogs, with inlaid turquoise for their eyes and spotted backs!
Frogs are very good luck since they live in and around water, which is extremely precious for the desert-dwelling Zuni.
The carving is traditional, in that it is suggestive, rather than realistically detailed, but these are definitely frogs.
Worn together, or separately, these earrings, and the pendant, are a lovely, flattering blue color.
Wonderful conversation pieces, these handsome frogs are an example of high-quality artistry and skill.
