Allison Lee, also known as Snowhawk, is a consistently prize-winning jeweler, who produces finely detailed and well-designed work, like this wonderful buckle. This buckle says “Quality!” in execution, materials and design. A curvy version of the traditional “cricket” design, floats above a textured background. This design was often seen on leather bow-guards, or “ketohs”. Sometimes, a turquoise, or other stone, was set in the center. In this piece, the subtly wavy frame keeps the emphasis on flowing curves, and highlights the marvelous, precisely executed design. Fan-shapes of parallel lines surround the central oval. These represent feathers. The center oval is kept silver, polished to a brilliant gleam, as are the curved forms between the fan shapes. These make a beautiful contrast to the linear texture of the feather fans and the hammered background, with no distraction from the interplay of silver textures and forms. Every element is cleanly and executed and beautifully formed. This buckle is a handsome example of modern Indian design, where the inspiration is from the past but the refinement and casual elegance are very today. Great with jeans; fabulous with tailored trousers and suits.
