Since the 1990s, this former welder has amazed the Indian art world with his prize-winning designs, meticulous workmanship, and magnificent stones.
All the stones in this piece are natural and of the highest grade – including the rare, premium quality Bisbee turquoise – and are hand-cut by the artist.
Like a rainbow arching against a cloudy sky, or a river reflecting a gorgeous sunset, the brilliant stones curl around the silver base. Thick, and polished, chiseled and stamped by hand, the silver echoes the angular forms of the breathtaking stones.
Gold channels separate some of the center stones. This seemingly minor detail accentuates the gold-colored matrix in the lapis and reinforces the warmth of the red coral. No detail is minor, in this master colorist’s hands.
Fan-shapes chiseled into the silver resemble traditional feather designs, while the dots and dashes that are stamped might refer to the earth, or water – they look sort of like tadpoles, don’t they?
No matter how interesting the silver work is, though, it is the vibrant ribbon of magnificent stones that makes this piece so special.
Masterful design and skillful execution do justice to the superb quality of these splendidly vivid stones. A treasure from the earth, to be enjoyed for generations to come.
