Dee Edaakie is a member of the famous Edaakie family of jewelers, painters, and carvers.
Dee’s carvings are abstract, although some are at the realistic edge of abstraction. He is also known for his ability to carve materials at the high end of the Moh’s scale of hardness – in particular, various forms of pyrite, Boulder opal, gold slag, K-2, apatite & hematite.
This particular carving, a cute little seal, is made from the very hard to carve hematite, an iron oxide, usually with a metallic appearance, that is the most important ore in iron.
The seal, head cocked to the side looks like he’s coming up to the water’s edge, curious about something. His whimsical form is familiar, though the unexpected heavier weight of the carving adds something more than whimsy.
A wonderful example of the artist’s style and willingness to work with odd materials, this tiny, adorable carving is a great find!
