A delightfully original version of a Holy Family, this ensemble pictures them on the flight to Egypt.
Daughter of Linda Lucero Fragua, Chrislyn has been making pottery since childhood.
Here, the recognizable Fragua style is evident in the serious, reverent expressions of Joseph and Mary, the sweet patience of the donkey, and the vigorously chanting Baby.
Joseph holds his shepherd’s staff, and is wrapped warmly in a highly decorated blanket, a headband on his head.
Mary, sitting atop the docile donkey, has her blanket over her head, as she holds the tightly swaddled Child, also in a decorated blanket.
Mary is dressed in traditional Pueblo style, with a long-sleeved blouse beneath her black wool manta.
The donkey has long ears and a short tail, laid across his rump.
Using local Jemez clay and clay slips, plus wild spinach plant for the black and grey, this group is totally traditional in materials and execution.
The concept is original and totally charming.
