Blue is blue, is bluer, in this meticulously designed ring.
Veronica Benally is a much-admired, award-winning artist,.
She is especially noted for chic, wearable and well-designed, modern pieces – and expert technique.
This tailored ring has much more than first meets the eye: lapis, blue as the ocean and blue as deepest space, is brightened by a small, inlaid red coral piece, bordered in silver.
A tiny inlaid circle of silver, just below this red moon, looks like the evening star.
Aside from these two rounds, all the lines are straight; vertically inlaid stones, and horizontally chiseled lines in the silver shank.
Slivers of silver separate the three, inlaid lapis rectangles, adding sparkle.
Look very closely, and you will notice that the narrow, center, lapis rectangle is actually composed of two strips of different stones.
A ribbon of denim lapis sits next to the darkest blue lapis and one of dark blue lapis cozies up to the larger denim lapis.
This touch of artistic genius subtly emphasizes each of the blues in the side, inlaid panels.
Another unexpected detail is in the shank. Instead of a smooth run, tapering back from the ring’s face, Veronica has cut out two vertical, broader lines, at one point.
This creates a little rounded area – like a column – at the sides of the shank, just before the chiseled lines disappear into solid, plain silver at the back.
Handsome, with impeccable inlay and a beautiful medley of blues, this ring has, special little touches that add imperceptibly to the whole effect.
Wonderful work; wonderful stones, and wonderful design; this ring has it all.
