College graduate, active bull roper in rodeos, and horse trainer, Shane won the prestigious, peer-voted “Artist of the Year” award from the Indian Arts and Crafts Association, where he is active in protecting authentic Native American arts from overseas and home-grown fraud. With all that, he also creates prize-winning jewelry, like this exquisite pendant!
Truly a little jewel, this shimmering piece comprises many different silversmithing techniques; all done to perfection and all done entirely by hand. Set in a a narrow shadowbox, the center showcases a handsomely formed butterfly, which is applied to the base. There are elegant designs above it, produces by chasing, or etching, the silver. This is a method often seen in antique silver coffee or tea sets, and the design here is reminiscent of those designs, too. Matching chased designs, and the narrow chiseled border that surrounds the centerpiece, are seen in the gracefully shaped bail; an elegant touch.
Below the butterfly, is a three-dimensional flower made in the ancient technique of mokume gane: a melding of copper and silver used by ancient Syrians, and Japanese weapon-makers. Its delicately formed petals and 14-karat gold center dome add to the beauty. Surprisingly, in this seemingly non-traditional design, is a traditional Native theme: the butterfly and the wild rose. This motif symbolizes the propagation of plants and crops, leading to happiness and good health.
Old-fashioned – even antique – in its appearance and appeal, this beautiful pendant contains yet more delight – and a real surprise. Turn it over; an entirely different look appears on the back, reiterating the same theme in a completely different way. Traditional stamp work creates a flock of butterflies and flowers, flitting and dancing all over the flat back of the pendant. You can keep this close to your heart and a secret, or even wear it back side out. A gorgeously elaborate jewel of a piece, by a major talent at the top of his game, and surprisingly within reach of most budgets. That’s a real gem!
