This accomplished folk artist is known for her slyly humorous figures that gently rib life on the reservation.
Here, she has created a folk art Nativity, with all the figures in Navajo dress.
Joseph, wears his hair in the traditional chongo (bun), with a headband. A colorful blanket is wrapped around him and he carries a wooden staff.
Mary, her hair in a traditional bun., is also wrapped in a blanket, its fringes curved over her broomstick-pleated skirt.
The sleeping Infant is in her arms, snugly swaddled, with the thatch of black hair common to Navajo babies.
The three Magi each hold a gift. They are all dressed up, in fancy shirts, concho belts and turquoise jewelry, along with their blue jeans and deerskin moccasins.
A plump sheep is textured all over, to resemble its fluffy fleece.
The artist has used metallic copper paint for Mary’s skirt, and blue metallic paint for one of the Magi’s shirt.
The whole group is meticulously hand carved, with lots of detail, all of it authentic to Navajo culture.
A different, and marvelously colorful Nativity to join your Christmas traditions for generations
