Daughter, sister, and granddaughter of award-winning, innovative artists, Jovanna expresses her creativity in her own style, creating breathtaking necklaces that use traditional techniques and modern materials.

Here, she collaborated with her former husband, an award-winner himself, noted for carving Corn Maidens from a variety of unusual shells and stones.

A highly polished piece of natural abalone shell forms the organic shape of the Corn Maiden pendant. On one side of the Corn Maiden, the shell is a natural, orange-y and striped color. On the other, the gorgeous iridescence of the inner surface – also natural – shimmers.

Incised lines depict her hair and face, on both sides.

The etched eyes and mouth are darkened, to stand out, and brilliantly blue turquoise stones are added to her “hair”, and as a pendant.

The turquoise splendidly complements the richly figured, russet hues of the abalone on one side, and the oceanic hues of the other.

Turn the corn maiden around, and the dazzling iridescence of abalone shell is revealed, as on a glistening mermaid.

On the iridescent side, her pendant is a gorgeous, deep red, natural coral, with the same turquoise hair ornaments.

The beautiful Corn Maiden is attached to a double strand of spectacular, natural carnelian and turquoise, with tiny copper beads, which are so small. and the same warm russet as the carnelian, they almost go unnoticed.

The lovely shaded and translucent carnelian is arranged in graduated, oblong “tongues”, separated by the same bright blue turquoise that is featured on the pendant figure.

Blue for the sky and water; russet red for the earth. This combination is not only esthetic, and striking, it reflects a basic Native ideal.

Balance in nature means plants will grow happily, and people will, too.

The pendant combines the two elements: red earth on one side, and glittering luminescence, suggestive of water, on the other.

The corn maiden was carved by Daniel Chattin, in collaboration with Jovanna.

The necklace is a gorgeous whole; a symphony of complementary color and symbols. It is simply spectacular.

Wear it with sweaters and slacks, as well on the town; it looks fabulous with both.
