Created by an artist of the Kayabi People of the Brazilian rain forest, this handsome ring is made of a palm nut local to the Amazon River Basin. LIke the pieces from this area, it has been carved entirely by hand, using very simple tools, also made by hand.Look closely, and you will note little legs at the bottom, along with a plump body, perky tail and bright little eye, which has been drilled into the hard material. This is an abstract design of a capybara, an animal related to the guinea pig, but much, much larger. It is a welcome food source for these people, and therefore a worthy subject to carve. This sort of simple ring was worn by indigenous people, who could not afford metal wedding rings, or other jewelry. With its burnished wood and handsome design, this would make a wonderful gift for a man in your life – something completely different and rarely seen.
