Alabaster Horse SculptureHarold Davidson
Already noted for his fetish sculptures of horses, and other animals dear to the Navajo, the artist here has expanded his scope to a larger size. He has captured the very essence of a beautiful horse, standing proudly in the windswept desert, even if we only see the head.
There is action suggested: the mane and forelock seem to feather in the breeze.Nevertheless, the marvelously modeled head and expressive face radiate serenity and confident strength, as well.
From every angle, this handsome sculpture presents a major artistic achievement, with the stone’s markings and textured areas used to emphasize the sensitive – almost loving – carving. Technique and emotion: an enviable combination in any work of art.
