10 Strand Clamshell Necklace
For centuries, long-established trade routes brought shells. coral, and other marine materials to the Pueblo of Kewa.
Noted artist Mary Coriz is known for continuing the long tradition of turning these chunks and pieces into heishi – disk-shaped beads.
Still, a tedious process that is very material-and labor-intensive, even with modern tools, the finished product, as seen here, is much more refined than in the past.
Here are ten (10!) strands of snowy, natural clamshell heishi that are smooth, burnished, and incredibly regular – also graduated in diameter.
Draped like fabric, this is a spectacular look, one that you can happily wear in every season.
