Nicolas Alavez

One of the wonderfully accomplished Zapotec Indian weavers whose rugs are eagerly collected for their beauty, technique and price.
From a village in the mountains of Oaxaca State, Mexico, his ancestors were conquered by the Aztec marauders, but, unusually, the men were left in the village, rather than taken as slaves, because their weaving abilities were so valuable. In fact, the village has been known for its fine weavings for over 2,500 years!
