Nelson Lewis

Nelson Lewis was born at the side of a road about 15 miles north of Winslow, Arizona, while his mother was being transported to the hospital in Winslow. He believes that is the reason he is a sand painter. His first art show was in the ’70’s.
Since then, he has been featured in Architectural Digest, played the part of a Medicine Man in a film, and was featured in an issue of Arizona Highways. In 1999, he entered his sand paintings into judging at the Santa Fe Indian Market. He was awarded Best of Classification, Best of Division, First place and Second place! His style combines tradition and true painting with the sands, creating shaded, 3-dimensional effects of selected elements of traditional sand painting. The results are quite different from the usual.
