Mary Small

IACA Artist of the Year for 2002, a peeer-elected national honor, she learned to work clay in the traditional method of her Jemez Pueblo homeland, using local clays hand-painted with clay slips, which are fired outdoors after each application of color.
She and her husband, Ivan Small, developed the delicate matte gray slip that distinguishes their pieces from other potters’ work, along with Mary’s characteristic intricate, all-over decoration. Mary Small’s award-winning pottery is included in the Heard Museum, the Denver Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as in permanent collections throughout the country.
