Marvin Jim was born and raised near Chinle, Arizona on the Navajo reservation. When he married Grace Begay, who grew up in a creative family, she encouraged him to rekindle his boyhood carving skills (he had made his own toys). Since then, Marvin has made his living, and a notable reputation, creating amusing, whimsical, innovative carvings: rabbits in overalls, smoking a cigarette, for instance. Giving back, Marvin also teaches younger, aspiring folk artists.
