Marie Suazo has been a consistent award winnersince 1990, and has been included in reference books and numerous other books and articles relating to Native pottery.
A very accomplished potter, she went on a three-year hiatus following the loss of her husband, who was her helper. Now she is back, doing everything by herself, and doing an outstanding job. Suazo is adept at firing black and red pottery with equal effects.
Many potters at Santa Clara Pueblo carve black pottery, but few match the deep and sharp-edged cuts that Suazo does. Additionally, she outlines the edges of every cut with a thin, matte black line. This subtle and precise outline of the design greatly enhances its visual impact.
