Madeline E. Naranjo

A potter from Santa Clara Pueblo, specializing in carved black pottery. Granddaughter of Madeline Naranjo.she continues a long family tradition. Still quite young (born in 1971), Madeline specializes in traditional, hand coiled Santa Clara Pottery, but adds her own contemporary sensibility. She gathers her clay from within the Santa Clara Pueblo, cleaning, mixing, hand coiling, shaping, carving, stone polishing, all by hand. She fires her pottery outdoors, in a pit, smothered with horse manure for the black pieces. The designs she chooses are based on nature, reflecting the respect and love she feels for our earth.
Her work is known for elegant forms, deep carving and flawless polish.
