Josephine Coriz

An older Santo Domingo Pueblo jewelry maker who is known for fine, prize-winning and handmade heishi. Heishi is the term for tubular or disk-shaped beads of shells or stones; an ancient form of adornment. Her shell and stone heishi beads are often so tiny, it is almost impossible to distinguish just one. She has made a demonstration board showing how a little brown cowrie shell is transformed into minuscule heishi beads, a labor- and time-intensive process, even today.
Josephine used her former married name of Tenorio for many years, but is now known by her family name of Coriz, again.
