Hubert Candelario

One of the very few potters at San Felipe Pueblo, he has become one of the top potters anywhere, with a pile of awards and soaring popularity among collectors. He makes immensely original and elegant micaceous pottery, including cut-out pottery, and “brain” designs, with incised squiggles painted black. Judges and collectors love his work, which makes him feel good.
“I have always loved structure and design, fields that I originally studied at school. While making [the hole-y] pot, I thought about ways to incorporate structural principles into the design. I began cutting away holes in a traditional pot to see how far I could push the limits of structure. It was a technical challenge that succeeded.
