Fred Koruh is a Hopi medicine man, who lives in Zuni Pueblo through marriage. He started carving in 1967 at the age of 11, helping his father make plaques and nameplates. After returning from nine years in the army, he took up carving kachinas in earnest, and has since won many top awards for his work. He prefers a contemporary version of the traditional kachina style, where the head is carefully and accurately detailed, while the body is more abstract.
