An accomplished Zuni carver who often uses fossilized ivory to carve bugs and insects. Florentino’s first carvings were simple, but his fetishes are now known to be exquisitely delicate, precise and realistically detailed. Amazingly, they are usually carved from one piece of ivory, despite the fragility of the many legs and wings that protrude. His non-insect pieces are also carved from one piece of stone – alabaster, etc. – and also in a delicate scale.
