Edna Leki

Daughter of Teddy Weahkee and the mother of Lena Boone and Dinah Gasper, both noted fetish carvers. Edna Leki (c. 1924 – 2003) was known as the first female fetish carver in Zuni. Her father was Teddy Weahkee, who was also her teacher. He taught her to carve and she followed his traditional style.
She was known for her turquoise- or lapis-covered fetish bowls: the pottery bowls were made in Acoma, then covered with small particles of the stones. Edna’s fetishes were then attached with sinew all around the four faces of the bowl. A hole was left inside, for the spirits to enter and leave.
