Dora Tse-pe

This acknowledged, and official, Master of gorgeously polished red and black pottery first learned about pottery as a child at Zia Pueblo. She married into San Ildefonso Pueblo, and there perfected her stone-polished technique, mentored by her mother-in-law, Rose Gonzales.
Her style balances traditional methods with innovative juxtapositions of clays, colors, and textures. She was one of the first to inset a turquoise in pots, inspired by the late, great, Popovi Da and Tony Da. She was also one of the first to use the refiring techniques that create misty russet dual tone rims and features on black pots. Dora is is considered one of the great contemporary Indian potters.
