Ambrose Atencio learned how to work with clay by observing family members, especially his grandmother. He aims to preserve the ancient ways of his ancestors and add to their legacy. All his raw materials – clay, sand, and natural plants – are found within Santo Domingo Pueblo. Ambrose usually paints the traditional birds, flowers, or geometric designs of his Pueblo. From gathering clay to firing in the ground, his pottery is entirely traditional. He is related to Hilda Tenorio Coriz and Robert Tenorio, both preeminent potters.
