Wright's Indian Art > Maliseet

The Maliseet nation was part of the Wabanaki Confederacy that controlled northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes. Unfamiliar to people outside northern New England and New Brunswick - and maybe even there - the Maliseet are a smaller tribe that has managed to sustain its cultural identity despite 500 years of European dominance.

They use materials found in their native Maine and northern New England, such as birch bark, marsh grasses, etc. Boxes and charming dolls are some of the items now made for sale; canoes are a bit more difficult to fit into most homes.
