Wright's Indian Art > Acoma Pueblo"Sky CIty" as it is called, is picturesquely situated atop a 600 foot high red sandstone mesa, about an hour's drive west of Albuquerque, NM. The site was chosen in part because of its defensive position against raiders. Visitors still have the option of using a hand-cut path carved into one side of the cliff, to climb down. Acoma is regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. Nowadays, about 50 families at a time live up there full-time, rotating yearly among tribal members. Most people live in modern villages nearby. Acoma is known for thin, hard white clay pottery, decorated in distinctive fine-line patterns. Many potters sell their work outside their homes, but not all of it is traditional; buyer be aware, and ask! There is a fine new Visitors Center and Museum at the base of the mesa. Well worth a side trip. Jewelry
