Wright's Indian Art > Jewelry > Bracelets > Steve LaRance (Hopi) > Watery Swirl Silver Cuff
A major presence in the Indian art world, this award-winning jeweler has a special ability to use traditional Hopi motifs and symbols in a thoroughly contemporary way. The precision of his tufa-cast designs is also legendary. Tufa casting is very tricky. Tufa is a naturally hardened "pre-sandstone" that is more like compressed sand, and therefore crumbles easily. Only one or two casts can be made from the hand-carved tufa mold. This bracelet has a wonderful graphic quality, thanks to the darkened background. The raised geometric rain cloud motif repeats in an animated pattern around the entire bracelet. And, there's a secret on the interior: a handsome Sunface, as well as ripples that signify rivers, tufa-cast like the rest of the bracelet. The sun, together with the rain, balances Nature, which results in abundant crops; therefore, health, happiness and prosperity. |
